Watch Out For Dinosaurs

Our daughter and grandchildren were driving home from church when our oldest granddaughter, Amelia, spotted 4 deer. “Deer, deer, deer, deer!” she exclaimed and then the game was on. Each grandchild, in turn, would state what they saw as they were driving. Car! School! Tree! Tree! Tree! Then our youngest granddaughter decided to enter the game. Ana spoke up and with a casual voice stated: Dinosaur.

Rich and I are blessed with the 4 best grandchildren in the world. I know that some of you might think you got the best and maybe we should schedule a time to compare but for now I’ll continue this story.

I am sure by now you are smiling but there is a small voice inside your head that is asking: what has this got to do with money? And I am going to tell you.

As you and I are working on our financial scenery, we state the obvious things we see: house, car, clothing, food, etc. but every once in a while, someone mentions something that is not so obvious. Something that we’ve heard about or even know about but that was not on our radar: dinosaur.

How we react to this reveals quite a bit about us. Do we listen to what is said and laugh? That’s ridiculous, there’s no need to discuss that! Do we look at the person that has mentioned the “dinosaur” and smile politely while in our mind we are thinking that has absolutely nothing to do with us? Do we gasp in horror at the possibility and then spend hours researching and developing a plan to deal with the “dinosaur”?

So how would you deal with the “dinosaur”? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Have an open and honest discussion.
  • Look at your financial scenery and decide where this fits in.
  • Talk with a professional.

The journey to financial freedom is just that: a journey. Enjoy the ride, look out the window and watch for dinosaurs!
